Own the Room: Your Model Guide to Dressing for Success at Castings

You’ve scored a modelling casting – amazing! This is your moment to showcase your look, your presence, and your potential. While your walk, poses, and personality are paramount, your wardrobe plays a crucial supporting role in making a memorable (and positive!) impression on casting directors and clients.

Think of your casting outfit as a tool to highlight your natural assets and versatility. Here’s how to dress strategically for modelling castings:

The Essential Foundation: Clean & Simple Silhouettes

Casting directors need to envision you in a variety of looks and styles. Your clothing should act as a neutral base, allowing them to see your body shape and how different garments might drape on you.

  • Tops: Fitted, plain-coloured tops like tank tops, camisoles, or t-shirts in classic neutrals (black, white, grey, navy) are your best friends. These showcase your physique without distraction. Avoid anything oversized, baggy, or with busy details.
  • Bottoms: Well-fitting, plain jeans (skinny, straight, or slim-cut in dark wash or black – avoid rips, embellishments, or trendy washes), simple leggings, or fitted skirts (mini to knee-length) are ideal. They should allow for ease of movement as you may be asked to walk or pose.
  • Underwear: Wear seamless, neutral-coloured underwear. You might be asked to try on sample garments, and you want to ensure nothing is visible underneath.

Footwear that Works:

Your shoes are important for showcasing your walk and overall posture.

  • Flats: Clean, simple trainers (think classic styles like Adidas Stan Smiths or Converse), ballet flats, or minimalist sandals are essential. You’ll likely be asked to walk, so comfort and ease of movement are key.
  • Heels (Bring Them!): If you’re comfortable and confident walking in them, bring a pair of classic, plain heels (not too high or chunky). Casting directors often want to see how you carry yourself in heels, especially for fashion-focused castings. Keep them in a separate bag and only put them on if requested.

Less is More: The Minimalist Approach to Accessories & Makeup

The focus should be on you. Avoid anything that could divert attention.

  • Jewellery: Keep it minimal. Small stud earrings or a delicate necklace are acceptable, but avoid anything large, dangling, or noisy.
  • Makeup: Opt for a “your skin but better” look. Focus on clean, healthy-looking skin. A touch of concealer, a swipe of mascara, and a neutral lip are usually sufficient. Avoid heavy contouring, bright eyeshadows, or bold lip colours unless specifically requested in the brief.
  • Hair: Keep your hair clean and styled simply. If it’s long, be prepared to wear it down and also to tie it back neatly (bring a hair tie!). The casting director needs to see your face shape clearly.

The Importance of Knowing the Brief (If Provided):

Always pay close attention to any instructions or suggestions in the casting call. If they specify a particular style or ask you to bring certain items, make sure you adhere to those guidelines.

Confidence is Your Best Accessory:

Ultimately, the most important thing you can wear to a casting is confidence. Feeling comfortable and prepared will allow your personality and natural presence to shine through.
