Essential Model Behaviour for a Successful Shoot

Essential Model Behaviour for a Successful Shoot

Landing a modelling job is fantastic, but the real work and reputation-building happen on set. A great portfolio might get you through the door, but it’s your professionalism, attitude, and understanding of set etiquette that will lead to repeat bookings and a thriving career. At BMA Models, we believe that being a successful model is as much about your behaviour as it is about your looks.

So, once you’re on set, how do you ensure you’re a dream to work with? Here’s your guide to impeccable model behaviour:

  1. Punctuality is Paramount (and Early is On Time!): There’s a saying: “To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is unacceptable.” Production schedules are meticulously planned, and every minute counts. Arriving late delays everyone, costs money, and immediately gives a negative impression. Aim to be at least 15-30 minutes early, allowing time to find the location, check in, and settle.

  1. Arrive Prepared (and Follow Instructions): Did the call sheet ask you to arrive with clean hair, no makeup, or specific underwear? Follow these instructions to the letter. They are given for a reason – to make the job of the hair, makeup, and styling teams easier and more efficient. Bring any requested items, like nude underwear, heels, or specific skin products.
  2. Be Professional and Respectful: A shoot is a collaborative effort. You’ll be working with a diverse team: photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, assistants, clients, and creative directors.

  • Acknowledge everyone: A simple “hello” and a smile go a long way.
  • Listen actively: Pay attention to instructions from the photographer, director, or client. Don’t assume you know what’s expected.
  • Be courteous: Treat everyone on set with respect, regardless of their role.
  • Minimise distractions: Keep your phone on silent and only use it during designated breaks. Avoid loud conversations or anything that could disrupt the workflow.
  1. Know Your Role (and Your Limits): Your job is to bring the creative vision to life through your poses and expressions.
  • Be receptive to direction: The team will guide you to get the shots they need. Be open to trying different things and adjust as requested.
  • Communicate effectively: If you’re uncomfortable with a pose, feeling unwell, or need a quick break, communicate this politely to the appropriate person (often the stylist or an assistant) rather than just stopping.
  • Don’t direct the shoot: While your input might be appreciated if asked, avoid trying to take control or offer unsolicited creative advice.
  1. Stay Hydrated and Energised (but Discreetly): Long shoot days can be tiring. Bring a water bottle and some healthy snacks if you like, but consume them discreetly during breaks. Avoid anything messy or that could stain the wardrobe.

  1. Care for the Wardrobe and Set: The clothes are often expensive samples or rentals. Treat them with extreme care.
  • Handle garments gently, especially when changing.
  • Avoid eating or drinking near the clothing.
  • Inform the stylist immediately if anything gets damaged.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings; don’t lean on props or set pieces unless directed.
  1. Maintain a Positive Attitude: Challenges can arise on any set – lighting issues, creative blocks, or wardrobe malfunctions. A positive, can-do attitude, even when things get tough, makes you a joy to work with and ensures you’ll be remembered for the right reasons. Your energy can genuinely impact the atmosphere of the entire shoot.

  1. Express Gratitude: At the end of the day, thank the team. A simple “thank you” to the photographer, stylist, hair and makeup artists, and the rest of the crew shows appreciation for their hard work and reinforces your professionalism.

Being a model is more than just looking good; it’s about being a valuable and reliable part of a creative team. By mastering these aspects of professional behaviour, you’ll not only have a smoother experience on set but also build a reputation that keeps those bookings coming in.
