Who inspires you to become a successful model? Is it Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevigine or someone else? Choosing a career path in modelling can be one of the most exciting and rewarding yet daunting jobs any young male or female can get themselves into.
Every famous model started off at the bottom, so you are not alone in trying to reach the top. Here, we will give some key advice into what you can do to become a successful model.
Prepare Yourself for the Industry
The first piece is of advice is be ready to work hard and expect long hours. Many young aspiring models see the industry as a glamorous job, walking down the runway styling haute couture and jetting to some of the most high-profile fashion hubs across the world. The reality, it is all these things, but you must be realistic, be prepared to work long hours and you will learn that travelling around in different time zones does take its toll.
Be prepared for knockbacks, it sounds awful as no one likes to be rejected for a job. However, you have picked a challenging industry and realistically, there will be knockbacks. Don’t let this phase you! Every great model or indeed anyone with a successful career has been rejected for jobs, instead of taking it to heart, use this as valuable experience to improve for the future.
Always Look Your Best
Kate Moss was scouted walking through an airport and people are out searching for models all the time, so be prepared and always look your best because you never know!
Pick Your Agency
If you are yet to be scouted, then start looking into agencies to pick the one that best suits you, that will teach and train you the key skills you need to succeed in this world. The benefits of agencies and having your own agent is that they will do all the admin work for you, from booking meetings with clients, choosing the right photos and portfolio shots, plus they are experienced and understand the market which is a great asset to have on board.
There are a lot of fake agencies out there, so really do your research into all of them to ensure they are 100% real and be careful of Scams!
Head Shots
Don’t spend thousands of pounds on your own head shots. Although photographers are great at what they do, the modelling agencies are knowledgeable in what clients are looking for. Your agency should organise professional headshots for you. If an agency does ask for an image, ask someone to take some shots of you. Dress well and use a well lit environment.
Personality
This is the most important! Contrary to popular belief, modelling is not all about looks. Remember as a model you are selling yourself and your personality so always make sure you have a smile on your face. When meeting a client smile and say hello to everybody you see, this way you are showing you are open, adaptable, friendly and welcoming. First impressions go a long way therefore it is essential for your true self to shine through.
Social Media
Most modelling professionals have a high number of followers on their social media accounts, namely Instagram, therefore it is time to start building your social media. Not only is this a great way to get yourself noticed by agents, it is also a fantastic way to practice posing in front of the camera. Try with different angles, clothes and backgrounds the more often you’re taking photos the more natural you will become in front of a camera. Remember clients will look at your Instagram site when choosing you for a campaign, so always be professional.
Professionalism and Commitment
Like with any career, professionalism is key. As a model, it is crucial to enjoy your work and be relaxed, however you must find the right balance between enjoying and being professional. Don’t go over the line as clients won’t re-hire you.
Models must keep themselves well maintained from their body, hair, nails, clothes and more, your appearance and personality are literally your job. Ensure you stay in shape and keeping fit, eat a balanced diet (yes, you can treat yourself from time to time!), frequently groom your hair, nails and wear your favourite clothes that suit your style – even when you are off the clock, some outfits will get you noticed.
Just enjoy yourself! If you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life. You’ll meet some great people, see some fantastic places as well as style some luxurious clothes and products. At the start take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself even if it’s something you’re not sure about, this way you’ll get more practice and experience to understand what you love about succeeding in your modelling career.
